The Social Action Office of the Diocese of Cleveland seeks to shape a more caring society and a more peaceful world through justice education, advocacy, community development and organizing. Our work is based on the call of the Gospel to work for the respect and dignity of all human life, the elimination of poverty, to speak out against injustice, and to promote the common good.
From a Gospel context, our goal is to work in creating a culture of life and dignity. We work to promote justice by advocating for the necessary changes through the empowerment of people and the monitoring of public and private systems. We are called to work in collaboration with the Ordinary of the diocese of Cleveland and the President and CEO of Catholic Charities Corp Diocese of Cleveland.
The office is composed of County-based social action offices, and offices for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services.
- Implementation of the legislative priorities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Charities USA, the Catholic Conference of Ohio, Catholic Relief Services, National Rural life Issues and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Issues of poverty, health care, housing, the economy, hunger, energy assistance fall within these priorities.
- Service as the diocesan liaison to Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice, a network of the 20 Catholic High Schools within the diocese of Cleveland to work together on issues of peace with justice.
- Continue in a leadership capacity within the diocese to advocate for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Issues within the Federal and State budgets, particularly the expansion of Medicaid in Ohio as well as timely issues following the lead of the USCCB and Catholic Conference of Ohio.
- Provide staff support for theongoing priorities of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development and Catholic Relief Services by increasing the collections, securing additional funding sources in these areas and providing more services to the parishes around the goals and work of these organizations.
