The Teen Parent Mentoring Program is a support program focused solely on empowering the teen parent to face the challenges of life with the tools and knowledge needed to rise above the statistical odds associated with being a teen parent. This program matches any pregnant or parenting teen in Lorain County, ages 13-19, with an adult mentor that meets with them for 10 hours per month in person and by phone to provide consistent support, education, and life experience to guide the young parents as they face their future. Although there are agencies that offer services to teen parents in this area, there focus is on strengthening the family bond and environment. This program provides a unique service to the population where the emphasis is solely on the parent striving for self-sufficiency.
The Teen Parent Mentoring Program builds the clients support network by connecting them face to face with various agencies, employers, schools and resources that will support and strengthen their financial sustainability, educational options, community resources and assist them in gaining employment skills. The mentor client relationship also helps to build self-esteem, problem solving abilities and promotes positive growth. The mentors provide transportation to the various venues to introduce the teen parent to local resources, employment prospects, educational options, and life skills development opportunities.
