There are multiple methods to choose from, each allowing you to track your unique signs and symptoms of fertility. Effectiveness of each method is based on proper training with a certified instructor and following the few rules to either achieve or postpone a pregnancy. Each method requires a period of abstinence within the cycle (if choosing to postpone a pregnancy). The effectiveness of each method varies from 96-99% effective.
Two Basic Methods of Natural Family Planning:
The Sympto-Thermal Method (ST)
While using the Sympto-thermal Method a couple learns to chart the woman’s basal body temperature each morning, and to chart the changes in her cervical mucus pattern throughout the cycle to determine which days are considered fertile or infertile. Following the rules of the method couples are able to either achieve or postpone a pregnancy.
The Ovulation Method (OM)
A couple practicing the Ovulation Method of NFP charts the woman’s cervical mucus pattern throughout the cycle to determine her days of fertility or infertility and follow the rules to either achieve or postpone a pregnancy.

Abstinence is an important part of the success of a natural method. There will always be days of abstinence due to travel, illness, or other situations within a family. Abstinence from sexual intercourse need not be abstinence from loving each other. Abstinence can bring about better communication and a feeling of shared responsibility.
Natural Family Planning can be learned with one of our certified instructors in a variety of methods. Which method will work best for you is a personal decision. Full autonomy is usually achieved after charting with an instructor for 6 months, and many before that! If you have an unusual circumstance, such as breastfeeding, pre-menopause or coming off a chemical contraceptive, an instructor will be happy to work with you until you are confident.
