This year we are pleased to announce two winners of the award.
Barbara Strittmatter of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Mentor will receive the award for her more than 20 years of experience feeding the hungry as a dedicated volunteer with their Helping Hands program. She works almost daily at the parish helping to sort and get food to those in the community that are most in need with “faithfulness, dedication and humility… always with a smile and a ‘glad to see you’ attitude.”
Sr. Rita Mary Harwood, Secretary of Parish Life for the Diocese of Cleveland will receive the award for her concern and many years in service to those on the margins in our District and Diocese. “Her concern for people on the margins goes far beyond words. She invests hours of her time – way beyond office hours – being present to them, to their families and to those who might make a difference in their situations. She listens, she learns, she generates ideas, formulates plans, and inspires others to become involved.”
Please consider attending the dinner in support of our award winners and the amazing work that they have done as fruitful branches on the vine of Christ.
Dear Community Members, because of the uncertainty around the current COVID 19 outbreak, and an abundance of caution for the safety and wellbeing of our Peace and Justice Dinner Attendees and their families we are postponing the 30th Annual Peace and Justice Dinner until Friday, September 18trh 2020. Please join us in praying for all those effected by this outbreak.
For over 30 years, the Catholic Commission of Lake and Geauga (CCLG) has promoted respect for all life, the elimination of poverty and spoken out against injustice by promoting the common good. The CCLG invites you to join us in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of our commission at our Annual Peace and Justice Awards Dinner and Silent Auction. This year’s dinner will be held Friday, September 18, 2020 at the Center for Pastoral Leadership—Founders’ Room, 28700 Euclid Avenue, Wickliffe, OH 44092. The social hour and silent auction begin at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 7:00 pm and the program at 8:00 pm. Over the years, the Commission has used the dinner to honor outstanding high school students, individuals and organizations with the Bishop Pevec Sower of Justice Award, given in recognition of an individual’s or organization’s commitment to social justice, peace, and human dignity.
Throughout the year the CCLG promotes and sponsors community presentations, forums, in-services for schools and resources on a variety of issues. Most recently, the CCLG worked to fight opioid addiction, senior suicide prevention, presented refugee simulations, sent out over 4,300 Christmas cards to our most disregarded neighbors, worked on ecumenical programs with the Jewish community, and provided the district with easy access to reports on legislation, e-news and information on social justice issues. We would like to encourage you to support our work by attending the dinner, purchasing a Patron or Ad in our program book or by donating an item to be used in our silent auction.
