One weekend each month, Camp Christopher opens its doors to provide persons 13 and older with developmental disabilities the opportunity to spend time relaxing and enjoying activities and field trips.
The Community Respite Program typically operates from 6 pm on Friday to 11:00 am on Sunday. Campers may attend all or part of these weekends. Shuttle services are provided at various locations in Summit County.
On a typical weekend, campers may enjoy the activities on the grounds like swimming, horseback riding, hayrides, and campfires. Or they may travel to local festivals, recreational activities, restaurants and more.
Staff that reside in the cabins with our Discovery Campers receive all required training of Home and Community Based Waiver Providers for the State of Ohio. The ratio for the program is 1 staff person for every 5 campers in attendance. Due to the program’s active schedule, participants must have basic personal care skills and be capable of demonstrating appropriate behavior, especially in public places. Assistance is available to dispense medications and minor medical treatments throughout the session.
Campers stay in ramped, dormitory style cabins segregated by gender, bunk beds and one in-cabin restroom. Although some terrain on the campgrounds is rough, the facility includes walkways to and from key areas.
The individual, local county board of developmental disabilities, Family Support Service dollars, and the Medicaid Waiver may provide funding for this program.
