We are celebrating the 39th Annual Walk of Hope this coming Saturday – Oct. 1, 2016.
The Walk began back in 1977 in multiple locations and included many more miles! Even though I wasn’t part of the planning back then, I know what was involved! And those who coordinated the Walk back then did an amazing job! The coordinator then was Bill Tighe – we’ve talked about Bill before – Coach Tighe, our Director of Camp Happiness and so much more!
Others who were very important to our Walk getting off the ground – Lillian Kastelic and Barbara Darr! Without these families we wouldn’t be holding the 39th annual this weekend. And the Kastelic’s & Darr’s still participate today! Joe Kastelic & his dad still collect pledges and walk the shorter route through Tremont. They do this along with Dr. Khalid Darr, Barbara’s husband!
Another important couple to the Walk is Jim & Mary Lou Beers. Jim had a stroke and was in a wheelchair. But he & Mary Lou didn’t let that stop them from being an inspiration to others in so many ways. They participated in the Walk and helped to raise so much support for us over the years.
Jim passed away 10 years ago this December. We miss seeing his smiling face at our Walk. But Mary Lou continues sharing their inspirational story. Shortly after Jim died, Mary Lou gathered a group of friends and family to come down and do the Walk in Jim’s memory – they created t-shirts that said “Thumbs Up To Hope”.
This article (continue to support the Walk and many of our programs today. Carol and her sister Joan are featured on our Flyer this year!
And finally…another long time supporter of the Walk is Dick Russ. Dick would come to the Walk with his brother Russell. After Russell passed away, Dick continued to support the Walk in his memory.
Thank You to the Kastelic’s, Darr’s, Oden’s, Dick Russ & Russell, Bill Tighe, and Jim & Mary Lou Beers!
